A professional sports team receives hundreds of resumes for a position that pays minimum wage with little to no benefits. Unless you know someone, most times you are not even going to get a call, much less an interview opportunity.

You might say to yourself, “Why Not? I have the qualifications the job posting requires.” The answer: Someone else that applied knew someone that knew someone. With everything a hiring manager is responsible for, he/she simply does not have the time to go through every resume. So if they receive a resume from someone they know, or if this is a referral, that resume is always going to get a look. If the candidate doesn’t bomb, many times the job is theirs. 

Is it fair? Did the team hire the best person for the position? No, it’s not always fair and they might not have hired the right person. But that’s just the sobering truth.
